Vegetables are your friend!

We all know what being a vegetarian means, but making a lifetime promise to ban all meat from your diet can seem pretty daunting, right? Well here is your perfect chance to give it a trial run if you're intruigued, since it's National Vegetarian Week from 14th - 20th May!

The UK has seen a dramatic rise in the amount of people turning towards more plant – based diets, especially our ‘millennials’ who share their new way of living with millions of followers of social media. This growing trend is a driving force behind many of our convenience stores, supermarkets and restaurants having a larger vegetarian offering.

So why go veggie? Well, there are so many benefits of becoming a vegetarian…

1. The obvious – spare animals!

2. Healthy - Many studies have shown that vegetarians seem to have a lower risk of obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and some forms of cancer

3. Save money – certain meats can be very expensive; swapping your meat for a plant or meat substitute such as Quorn can save you money, whilst being a healthier option at the same time! #WINNER

4. Help save the environment - There is a growing demand for space to grow crops for animal feeds, which is resulting in deforestation

Vegetarian week gives you the chance to experience a meat-free diet. Costcutter is here to help show you how to cook up some tasty, cheap (bonus!) and yummy dishes over the 7 days.

Start off with a dish that you already probably love – chilli. Try our vegetable chilli, it is so versatile and can be enjoyed in many different ways. Replace your meat with extra vegetables, this still makes it super filling and helps you on your way to your five-a-day! If you still need a meaty fix, try adding some Quorn Meat Free Mince as an alternative.

For lunches, go for exciting salads. Yes, we said it – exciting salads. They can be made exciting, and filling! Many people associate salad with leaves, soggy tomato and HUNGER! Try our Quinoa, Avocado and Sweet Potato Salad. Also, learn how to pronounce Quinoa, so you don’t fall at the first hurdle in-store. It’s "kee-NOO-ah"

So if vegetarian week has gone great for you, and you have enjoyed the versatility that a vegetarian diet can give you, why not practice it more often? Label yourself as a ‘Flexitarian’. The Flexitarian diet is a plant-based with the occasional addition of meat. There are no rules, you could have one meat-free meal a week or choose to eat meat on rare occasions.
