What make the perfect burger?

It’s a question we’ve been asking ourselves a lot recently as we approach National Burger Day (23rd August). And for us, it’s all about finding that magical combination of texture, flavour and delicious accompaniments.

The burger must be juicy with a slightly crunchy exterior, the bun must be soft yet robust enough to hold the precious meat within, and the toppings must be full of flavour. Get it right and you’ve got the ultimate comfort food. Whether it’s a speedy after-work feast for one, a fun family meal, or an informal evening with friends; burgers really are a special treat that everyone will love.

Of course, the simplest option is to buy ready-made burgers and adorn them with your own choice of toppings. But making your own burgers is surprisingly easy and so satisfying. The basic ingredients are simply minced beef and seasoning but you can also add a little chopped onion and herbs if you wish. Then all you need to do is shape the mixture into burger patties, cover and pop into the fridge for about an hour to firm before cooking on a barbecue or griddle pan. Once cooked, you can get creative with your chosen toppings before tucking in to your creation.

When it comes to toppings, what you put on top of your burger is a question of personal taste. We love a simple slice of cheddar with a dollop of ketchup, or a crumble of Danish Blue cheese. But you can just as easily create six-inch high masterpieces adding a range of toppings such as grilled bacon (which tastes even more delicious when paired with a slice of brie), charred onions, sliced avocado, thinly sliced fresh tomatoes, relishes and pickles.

With so many delicious combinations, we think it’s time to stop treating burgers as simply fast food and instead give them the respect they deserve as one of the most delicious foods ever invented. So, grab the ketchup and let’s raise a toast to National Burger Day!
